Disaster Resilient Youth and Women Entrepreneurship Project

Introduction

The “Disaster Resilient Youth and Women Entrepreneurship Project” aims to create self-employment and employment opportunities for youth and women in disaster-prone areas. By enhancing economic competitiveness through on-farm and off-farm small and micro-enterprises, this initiative aligns with ongoing efforts of the Government of Nepal. It focuses on increasing access to resources and opportunities for vulnerable groups, specifically youth and women, while fostering entrepreneurship and financial resilience.

"Skilled youth are more likely to get employment than unskilled." The project collaborates with various skill development programs and local government initiatives to enhance employment prospects and establish business networks.

Key Objectives

  1. Strengthening Resilient Enterprises
Youth and women-led enterprises are being equipped with resilience strategies to combat multiple hazards and vulnerabilities through business continuity planning.

  2. Improving Profitability
Supporting small and micro-enterprises in achieving profitability while being resilient to disasters, risks, and vulnerabilities.

  3. Enhancing Access to Financial Services
Facilitating better access to financial services to ensure the sustainability and growth of enterprises led by youth and women.

Target Communities and Context

The project operates in four municipalities:

  • Gorkha District: Sahidlakhan Rural Municipality and Palungtar Municipality.
  • Nawalparasi-Bardaghat Susta West District: Susta and Pratappur Rural Municipalities.

These areas are highly vulnerable to natural disasters, including floods, landslides, extreme weather, and crop failures. Previous initiatives by SAHAMATI in partnership with LWR have strengthened these communities’ resilience through Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) and Early Warning Systems (EWS).

Implementation Strategies

The project collaborates closely with local governments and stakeholders. Key steps include:

  • Introductory Visits and Meetings: The SAHAMATI team visited municipal offices to introduce the project, discuss planned activities, and share budget allocations.
  • Partnerships with Local Governments: Collaboration with municipalities and related government projects ensures the alignment of efforts and resource optimization.
