Nature-Based Solutions: The Triple Benefit Program
Introduction
SAHAMATI, in collaboration with WWF Nepal, has launched the “Nature-Based Solutions: The Triple Benefit Program” to enhance climate resilience in the Lower Narayani River Basin. This project focuses on integrating Nature-based Solutions (NbS) to restore ecosystems, reduce community dependence on natural resources, and promote sustainable development and biodiversity conservation.
"Empowering local communities with sustainable solutions for climate resilience and ecosystem restoration."
Objectives
The primary goals of the project include:
Establishing a climate-resilient Lower NarayaniRiverBasin through enhanced ecosystem services.
Reducing reliance on natural resources by empowering communities to adopt sustainable livelihoods.
Raising awareness among duty bearers on the consequences of unsustainable natural resource usage and promoting NbS approaches.
Project Focus Areas
The project concentrates on the Gindri and Khageri watersheds within the Lower Narayani River Basin. Interventions were selected based on societal challenges identified during stakeholder consultations, including:
Insufficient water availability.
Riverbank erosion.
Forest fires and uncontrolled grazing.
Limited livelihood opportunities.
Inadequate representation of marginalized groups.
"Addressing environmental and societal challenges through collaborative, nature-based strategies."
Key Interventions
Forest and Watershed Management
Implementation of Improved Forest Management for Climate Co-Benefits, promoting sustainable forest practices.
Preparation for forest fire mitigation through training and stakeholder collaboration.
Encouraging responsible watershed practices with a focus on climate considerations.
Gender-Inclusive Participation
Meaningful involvement of Forest User Groups (FUGs) and stakeholders from diverse gender backgrounds.
Representation of men and women in decision-making processes, training sessions, and project activities.
Cash for Work (CFW) initiatives, such as forest fire line construction and invasive species removal, ensuring equitable participation.
"Prioritizing female participation to bridge gender gaps and empower marginalized communities."
Community Empowerment and Livelihood Diversification
The project actively promotes:
Diversification of livelihood sources to reduce dependency on natural resources.
Training sessions, workshops, and meetings to build community capacity and resilience.
Inclusive Approach to Sustainability
By prioritizing female participation, sending written invitations, and involving vulnerable communities, the project ensures equitable resource distribution and opportunities. This inclusive model addresses gender inequalities while building long-term resilience for the environment and the community.
"Equity and inclusivity are at the heart of our efforts to foster sustainable change."
Conclusion
The “Nature-Based Solutions: The Triple Benefit Program” exemplifies a holistic approach to climate resilience by integrating ecosystem restoration, sustainable livelihoods, and gender inclusivity. Through its innovative strategies, the project aims to create a sustainable and climate-resilient future for the Lower Narayani River Basin and its communities.
