• INVOLVEMENT IN GROUP ACTIVITIES HAS INCREASED THE DIGNITY OF PHULKUMARI

Phulkumari Mahato Phulkumari Mahato lives in Mukundapur VDC of Nawalparasi district, and is from a traditional caste group. She was motivated to join the group by observing other women involved in group and was also requested by her friends to join the group. She is now a member of Kalika Swabalamban Group. She lives in a joint family of seven with her parents in law.

Mahato says that she has been loved by the family members once she began her involvement in group activities. She adds the concept and the way her parents in law used to treat her, has changed drastically. Her husband used to generate income through daily wage based labor. But when she was involved in the group, she got opportunity to receive loan. She used loan to buy a buffalo cart for her husband. Once they started to run the cart they initiated to earn for their living. Her husband is happy to have her wife involved in group activities and is supporting her.

Mahato family never used to grow any vegetables. The family has the feeling that fish, pulse and chilly are the only vegetables and they are used to them. Samunnati program in 2006 organized pig raising training, 16 weeks long vegetable farming class and farmers to farmers program coordinating with district agriculture office, where Mahato had got opportunity to participate.

After the training, the members of Kalika Swabalamban (self-help) Group including Mahato have initiated to grow variety of vegetables in group basis. Mahato says that I learnt about vegetables and have been able to eat vegetables from the group based vegetable farm. She adds all the members of the group have fulfilled the demand of their homes for vegetables. Group work and unity is important to learn and share from one another she says. As a result I have to save and send children to school as others members in the group do.

Besides, Mahato says that I have received another loan for goat rising from the group. Now I have five goats with improved pans. This is all due to our collaboration with Samunnati program. Our eyes have been opened by the program and our confidence has been increased to live with hope and happiness.
